The Welcome Stranger Nugget was the largest alluvial gold nugget ever discovered. It was unearthed by Cornish miners John Deason and Richard Oates on 5 February 1869 in Moliagul, approximately 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Dunolly, Victoria, Australia. Although several replicas of the Welcome Stranger are displayed in museums and showcases across Australia, the original nugget was unfortunately melted down shortly after its discovery. In 1897, an obelisk was erected near the discovery site to commemorate the remarkable find.
