First minted in 1961 by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery, the South African 1 RAND gold coin with matte finishing were mostly produced for export. A large number of these coins have been smelted and specimens are becoming rare. Made primarily from gold sourced within Africa, the gold coin features the likeness of Jan van Riebeeck, a dutch navigator, ambassdor and colonial administrator for the East India Company, considered by many to be a pivotal figure in South Africa's history, on its obverse, and the graceful springbok antelope on its reverse.
Key Highlights:
*These coins were struck between 1961 and 1983, dimensions may vary slightly amongst the coins and the coin is almost similar to the British Half Sovereign Gold Coin.
