The Coinage Act of 1792 established the U.S. dollar as the official unit of currency for the newly formed United States and set the groundwork for other denominations, including the quarter dollar. Since then, the quarter has seen numerous changes in design, composition, and weight. Despite these variations, only six major designs were introduced during the era of silver coinage, which lasted from 1796 to 1964. So, how much does a silver quarter weigh? The original Coinage Act specified the weight of a quarter, and later Coinage Acts revised that standard. As a result, the weight of a silver quarter depends on the year it was minted.
*Coins minted from 1796-1838 are struck with a gross weight of around 6.74 grams or .2167 troy oz with a fine silver weight of .1934 troy oz.
*Coins minted from 1838-1852 are struck with a gross weight of around 6.68 gramd or .2148 troy oz with a fine silver weight of .1933 troy oz.
*Coins minted from 1853-1872 are struck with a gross weight of around 6.22 grams or .2 troy oz with a fine silver weight of .1800 troy oz.
*Coins minted after 1872-1964 are struck with a gross weight of around 6.25 grams or .2009 troy oz with a fine silver weight of .1808 troy oz.
*Washington Quarters minted between 1932 and 1964 are minted in silver, other years struck after 1964 contain no silver content.
